Housebuilding restarts are lifting demand for trades

A pickup in UK residential starts has translated quickly into site-level recruitment, with groundworks and finishing trades the tightest categories.

Employers report that the binding constraint is supervision rather than labour: site and assistant site managers are the hardest roles to fill, and their absence limits how many plots can be opened.

Construction hiring succeeds or fails on supervision and certainty. Trades assess employers on whether hours are guaranteed, whether sites are well run, and whether the programme is real. Where employers can evidence those things, recruitment gets materially easier — and where they cannot, no rate premium fixes the attrition.
