AI engineering roles now outpace general software hiring
18 Aug 2026 · 4 min read

Postings for AI and machine-learning engineers rose again while generalist software vacancies fell for a fourth consecutive quarter. Employers are consolidating budget into fewer, more senior, AI-adjacent hires.
Key points
- AI and ML postings rising while general dev roles fall
- Hiring concentrated in London and Cambridge
- Senior pay rising, mid-level searches lengthening
British employers advertised fewer generalist developer roles this quarter, but demand for engineers who can ship production machine-learning systems kept climbing. Shortlists form within days for candidates who pair conventional backend experience with model deployment work.
The split is uneven by region. London and Cambridge absorb most AI hiring, while regional clusters still advertise mainstream platform and support roles at close to last year's volumes.
Salary pressure sits at the senior end. Mid-level engineers report longer searches, and several employers have replaced two junior openings with a single senior hire.
What this means for hiring
In technology, the practical consequence is that briefs written a year ago no longer match the market. Roles defined as broad, generalist engineering attract volume without depth, while narrowly specified senior roles attract almost nobody through advertising alone. We usually recommend splitting the requirement: define the two or three capabilities that genuinely cannot be trained, then treat everything else as developable.
Across the UK, we are seeing employers run smaller, more deliberate searches: fewer roles open at once, tighter shortlists, and more willingness to train for the last twenty per cent of a specification.
If you are hiring in technology right now, the practical takeaway is to shorten your process and be explicit about what is genuinely non-negotiable. Fewer, better matched candidates almost always beat a longer list — and in a market moving this quickly, speed of decision is itself a competitive advantage.
